The Wing is King! BMW Oracle Wins 33rd Americas Cup

As long time multihull enthusiast it was exciting to see two giant multi's go at it for the biggest prize in sailing at the 33rd Americas Cup this past week. Local Golden Gate Yacht Club's trimaran BMW Oracles was dominant in their victory over the Alghini team.

The BMW Oracle tri  is simply a technological marvel, and after the first race on Friday it was pretty obvious its wing sail was a huge advantage over Alghini's traditional soft sails. That being said, both of these high-tech monster multi's were averaging 20 knots of boat speed in about 7-8 knots of wind. It's great to see multihulls in a mainstream event like the America's Cup, and to demonstrate to a wide audience the stability and speed that make multihulls so much fun. Hopefully with this win the San Francisco Bay Area sailing community can host the next America's Cup. What a blast that would be!
